A: What’s that book about, Daddy? Can I read it?

Me: It’s called American Gods, darling—it’s about a man who meets a lot of gods and travels around America.

A: We learn about God at my after-school club!

Me: There are lots of gods in this book, though. They’re old gods, from a long time ago.

A: (thoughtful pause) I think we must learn about the new God.
